ChatGPT connects to Less as a custom connector over MCP. Once added, ChatGPT can search your workspace, analyze tables, trace lineage, and check job health.
You need a Less API key first. See Get a bearer token.

How ChatGPT differs from Claude

ChatGPT uses the connected MCP server directly - it doesn’t take a separate uploaded “skill” the way Claude does. You don’t need the GitHub download here. The Less server ships its own built-in guidance (how to resolve ids, respect result caps, drill into failures, and run assets safely), so ChatGPT follows the right workflow from the connector alone.
Want to steer it further? Paste the highlights from the Less skill into a ChatGPT Project’s custom instructions. It’s optional - the server guidance already covers the essentials.

Add the connector

1

Enable connector/developer settings

In ChatGPT, open Settings → Connectors. Adding a custom MCP server requires enabling Developer mode (under Settings → Connectors → Advanced).
2

Add Less as a custom connector

Choose Add custom connector (MCP) and enter:
  • Name: Less
  • URL: https://<your-workspace-host>/api/mcp (default host app.less.tech)
3

Authenticate

For authentication, provide your API key as a bearer token:
Paste it into the access-token / API-key field, or as a custom Authorization header, depending on your ChatGPT version.
4

Save and enable

Save the connector and enable it. The Less tools become available in the composer (look under the tools / connectors menu in a chat).

Try it

In a chat with the Less connector enabled, ask:
ChatGPT resolves the assets through Less, runs the analysis, and links back to the app. It will only start a run if you explicitly ask it to.
Custom MCP connectors are available on ChatGPT’s paid plans, and exact labels vary by version. If you can’t find Developer mode, check OpenAI’s current connector documentation for your plan.
